History

Green fashion has always been in existence but has recently started gaining momentum among a few niche designers. This trend finds itself limited to Western, developed countries as well as top designers including Chevy Chase and Patagonia. But green fashion has always had an outlet in boutiques like Apple Seeds, American Apparel and Eggie.com which are located in urban areas. Mega-retailers such as Wal-Mart offer a separate aisle for green fashion. These garments are primarily limited to babies and teen clothing. Proper green fashion clothing is hard to find for the adult category. Usually adults have to contend with green fashion in the form of:

• Clothing accessories such as sunglasses.

• Repurposed clothes where the fashion designer works on traditional cut out cloth pieces instead of natural fabrics.

Identifying Green Fashion Garments

Nowadays more than 72% of retail garment stores in the U. S. sell green clothing. These range from baby and children's clothing to leggings and hoods including fashion accessories. Green clothes are expensive and so it is highly important to know how to pick them from a rack. Such stores generally place green clothing in well-defined aisles in a separate section and mark it in bold.

Advantages of Green clothing:

• Flame resistant.

• Soft and sensual cloth with the feel of silk.

• Stretchable and not prone to shrinkage after repeated washes.

• Color does not run off bright colored clothes.

• Insulated and protective clothes designed in layer format.

• Not itchy, bulky or heavy.

• Made of natural fiber not prone to toxic reactions exposing the wearer to chemical substances.

• Protects the wearer from pathogens.

Green clothing and Accessories

Caps and Hats: These caps were basically designed solely for cyclists in the 1970’s, but in recent years have become an eco-friendly fashion statement. Designed by Shaun Deller, these caps are primarily repurposed garments made from natural fiber of cotton and wool. The caps are non-flammable, recyclable, and biodegradable and feel soft to touch. Due to the looseness of the natural fiber, the caps have the rare quality of being porous and light making them non-sweaty, non-restrictive and breathable.

Cell phone keypad button earrings: This green, fashion accessory item is made out of used cell phone keypads. It is a recycled fashion design filled with additional items of buttons, natural wire and shells. All the small items used to transform the cell phone keypad into a modern earring are natural. This makes the repurposed item environmentally-friendly. However, they are not cheap and are only sold in niche stores.

iWood sunglasses: This green fashion accessory is a trendy eco-friendly item sold in many stores. These affordable and custom designed sunglasses are lightweight and sustainable in design. They are made out of natural wood fiber such as veneer and pine.

Jackets: Eco-friendly jackets are designed in linen. The jackets are short-sleeved and stretchable in style. The jackets are individually made and not mass produced in sweatshops under inhumane working conditions. The Montreal designers assure that their clothing product is not only green in style and design but also in origin.

Bamboo scarf: The bamboo scarf has become a green fashion statement for water preservation. The bamboo used usually originates from or near a water source. It is colored with non-toxic dye and then systematically processed to produce bamboo silk. This silk is then wrapped in yarns and sold to manufacturing outlets where it is repurposed by designers as bamboo scarves.

The Organic Tee: This tee was used as a clothing attainment for the preservation of trees in the early 1980’s. Today, the organic tee as the name suggests is making a big comeback among teens and adolescents. It is made out of water based natural fiber which means the tee fabric finds root in water-based plants. The tee is light, soft and stretchable in nature.

Recycled Green watches: Originally custom made for men; these watches are ideal fashion accessories for both genders. They are made out of used sports equipment such as tennis balls. Big and bulky green watches are also being manufactured using recycled footballs and basketballs. Other used items include matchbooks, traffic cones, electronic equipment with wires and batteries. These green watches are quite durable.

Ecoist green bags: These green fashion accessories are basically repurposed items. They are expensive as they are made from a combination of many recycled cut items of candy wrappers, movie billboards and soda can pull tabs. The most distinguishing feature of the ecoist bag manufacture is the green fashion philosophy echoing behind it. The designers and manufactures argue that fashion should be created from waste and natural environmental products. They further state that fashion accessories are an integral part of fashion clothing. Ecoist bags are eco-friendly and do not pose a threat to human health.

Reware Juice bag: The large Reware Juice Bag is a green fashion accessory with handy storage space. These bags are designed in the shape of square and circular bags.
